Q. pron. “who, what, which, that (relative pronoun)” (Category: Pronoun)

Q. , pron. “who, what, which, that (relative pronoun)” (Category: Pronoun)

The most common relative pronoun in Quenya, generally used without any further inflection, such as: Átaremma i ëa han Eä “our Father who are in Heaven” (VT43/12). It can mean “who, what, which, that”, depending on context. This is in addition to (and of similar origin as) the use of i as the definite article “the”. See the entry on relative pronouns for further discusion.

Conceptual Development: The use of ᴱQ. i as a relative pronoun dates all the way back to the ᴱQ. i text of the 1910s (PE15/32). For a period in the 1940s ᴹQ. i was the basis for declinable relative pronouns like ᴹQ. isse “where” (PE23/97, 111), but in later writings it was only ya that was declined, as in yassë “wherein”.
